In order to create digital painting in Photoshop, designers are required to create a new document. Before beginning you must know the difference between “creating a new document” and “opening an existing image” into Photoshop. When you are opting for “create a new document” you will be greeted with a blank canvas where you can draw anything with the help of brushes available in Photoshop. You can also import images and graphics into your canvas. While if you opt for Opening an existing image, a selected image will be loaded upon which you can perform different editing tasks.
In order to create a new document you can use New Document dialog box. There are several different ways of accessing New Document dialog box which are as follows
- Click on the Create New button on the start screen of Photoshop.
- Click on the File menu in Menu Bar located at the top of the interface and then select New.
- A keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+N can also be used for accessing New Document dialog box.
Once you have access to New Document dialog box you will notice 8 categories listed on the top which include Recent, Saved, Photo, Print, Art & Illustration, Web, Mobile and Film & Video. Recent category is opened by default and it will show you the recently used document sizes. While creating a new document it is advised to check if there is already a preset which we can use that matches the required size. You have to 1st select the type of document which you are required to create. Once you select the category e.g. Photo you will see different preset document sizes. At 1st only few presets are displayed and you can view all the presets by clicking View All Presets +. The details about the selected preset appears in the panel named Presets Details which is located on the right side of dialog box. In this panel you can define the width and height of your document. It will also let you define the Color Mode (RGB Color as default) and Resolution (300pixels/inch) of the document. If you are satisfied with the settings of your documents you can click the Create button. Clicking the Create button will close the New Document dialog box and will open new document in Photoshop.
